New IRBA board chairman augments regulator’s independence
On Thursday 17th May 2007 Dines Gihwala was duly elected as the chairman of the first board of the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA) as constituted under the new provisions as set out in the new Auditing Profession Act, says Kariem Hoosain, the CEO of the IRBA.
“We are privileged to have Mr Gihwala, Chairman and Senior Partner of Hofmeyr, Herbstein & Gihwala Inc, one of South Africa’s largest legal firms, serve as the new chairman of Board. We could not have asked for anyone better to lead the Board of a regulator such as ourselves,” says Hoosain.
Hoosain explained that the new Auditing Profession Act, which came into operation in April 2006, stipulated that the board’s membership be expanded to include non-members of the auditing and accounting professions. The Act requires that a maximum of four positions are to be held by Registered Auditors (RAs), while the other six positions must be held by non-RAs.
